Mandarin farmers of Arunachal Pradesh and pineapple farmers of Meghalaya are over the moon after their produce was selected for export to Dubai.
One metric tonnes of Arunachal orange (mandarin), cultivated by farmers of Dambuk in Lower Dibang valley of Arunachal Pradesh, was exported by a Jet Airways flight from here on Tuesday. It will reach Dubai on Wendesday, where it will be sold at Al-Aweer fruit and vegetable market. It provides the freshest produce not only to Dubai but also to the rest of UAE.
Arunachal orange has got a GI (geographical indications) tag.
The initiative was taken by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda), an apex organisation under the ministry of commerce and industry, which promotes export of various agro products.
An Apeda official said, This is the first air shipment from Guwahati and if the response is good, there is huge scope for exporting other horticultural produce.
